My name is Sarah and I live in Pond Eddy. I am 10 years old and I am writing to you about the Upper Delaware. People say that Route 97 on the Delaware is a scenic byway, and this is true. I have also heard people say there was an eagle’s nest on the river, which is also true.

But people are clear-cutting the woods straight through in Callicoon. I wonder why people are junking up the area with ugly signs and other things? I thought they said it was a scenic byway! The eagles in their nest flew out—moved away. Why do we not understand? The eagles went away because too many people watched them and probably some got too close. Someone in Tusten made a huge road going out to houses on a ridge. He is cutting the trees and destroying homes of wildlife: birds, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, rabbits, toads, frogs, bears, salamanders, worms and more. What is this person not aware of? What is he doing to the earth?

This affects me as a child because for the many generations to come I would want to have worms that help the soil or have at least one river in the U.S. that is not polluted. When I will be 16 or so will there be any wild bears around this area anymore? What will happen if the Delaware gets polluted? What about the fish?

I care about the animals and if they become extinct other kids, including me, will not have the pleasure to live with them. The eagle’s nest is one of the most fascinating things in the area because the eagles came back. You could see when they first came the nest was small, and how now the nest is big but with no eagles.

I like the idea that I live on a beautiful river in the United States that is not polluted. I like that it is famous for trout. I am proud of living on this river with a house and everything else. Now some things are starting to turn this river and the scenic byway the wrong way.

I don’t appreciate the people who are disrespecting the environment. They are people who are blind to the fact that humans are getting chemicals in their bodies because they eat fish that are polluted by chemicals in the water. They don’t care unless it affects them, only them.

That is what I see going around in the area. I think something should be done. Enough so that the environment is not a risk, so the environment is safe. We have to make it happen. Have faith in yourself. You can make a difference, we all can.
